I remember hearing and learning about Juneteenth in college. Like that was literally the first time that I had ever heard of it. Because it was not included into history books that were used when I was in grade school.

And I was so surprised to learn that the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 did not end slavery, as taught in many history textbooks.

Surprised to hear that the news didn’t reach the people of Texas until over 2 and a half years later. I can only imagine what slaves during that time must have felt.

When Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished.

So June 19, 1866 was transformed from a day of unheeded military orders into an annual rite, “Juneteenth”.

Now, we celebrate “Emancipation Day” on June 19th. Celebrating the culture and achievements of African Americans. You can find several celebrations going on in your area. Which may include but not limited to prayer services, festivals, cookouts, food and music.

Use these free downloadable coloring sheets for yourself, family and friends to spread awareness and to celebrate this special time in history.
