New beginnings are scary. And so much so, that we often shy away from trying new things, right? Simply out of fear. But I believe that God wants to do a new thing in us this year. If we allow Him to do so.
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19 NIV
When I was thinking about this topic, I thought about the “The Croods” – the 1st installment. Have you seen it? It’s a cute family friendly animated film about a cave family.
And throughout the movie especially the beginning, the dad, Grug is so afraid of anything “new”. He tries to constantly convince everyone that new is bad. And has almost forbidden anyone in his family to try anything new. But in reality his fear or reservations keep him from experiencing some pretty cool things that could have actually help to make life better for his family.
Yes, I know, it’s a cartoon. But just like Grug, how many of us get in our own way at times because we are scared to try something new?
“New” does not necessarily mean bad.
2020 was a year of so many new things for me. And to be honest some pretty scary things. Like God, for real…are we about to do this? But none of them were bad. In fact, each new thing, resulted in propelling me forward into my God purpose.
Because here’s the thing, if we can stir up faith on the inside of us to push past the fear, we will be surprised at what God has ahead of us.
And we will be surprised by what God has already prepared for us. If we would just walk into it. With God by faith.
God invites us into fresh starts.
New beginnings.
Newness of life.
New places and new spaces where we can grow in Him.
Where we can grow in His plan and purposes for us.
Because one thing is for sure, we cannot do the things that we’ve always done and expect to move fully into all that God has for us.
Walking with God, means taking leaps and bounds in our faith in Him.
Launch into the deep.
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Luke 5:4 NIV
Now there is nothing new under the sun but as God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways, we look to God for our next steps.
So when God wants to do a new thing. In us. It’s not new to Him, but it may be new to us.
Sounds fun? And a little terrifying!
Let God do a new thing in you this year. And begin by just starting.
By just doing it SCARED. Whatever that thing is that God is nudging you to do that you’ve never done before but you know it is Him.
Just do it.
And let us go after all that God has for us this year.
Amen.
