Hawaii Lei Making
Hawaii Lei Making. While we were in Hawaii I had the opportunity to learn how to make a lei. A complimentary lei making session was offered by our resort. I had no idea that they were actually made of real plants and flowers (orchids of course) and just the rich history behind them. The extent of my knowledge of a lei was seeing the plastic ones in party stores for a luau party. So it was cool to learn about them and to see how they were/are traditionally made. Oh and Ukulele and hula lessons were also complimentary of the resort.
For me, getting to meet Aunt Tutu, learn and talk with her were the highlight of it all. She’s a sweetheart! I enjoyed the session. The cool thing about the lei bracelet that I made is that I was able to take the greenery home, put it in the freezer and when I want to wear it, I can just buy fresh flowers and put it in…any time of the year (Aunt Tutu told me that trick). So neat!
This is a quick clip of Aunt Tutu, making a lei for a young boy using a Hawaiian leaf. This type of lei worn around the shoulders represents honor and respect and the spirit of aloha.
